My husband and I both turn 40 this year and we decided to have a joint party. While no one likes to get older, I think celebrating birthdays are important. For me it wasn’t just about the milestone age, it was more of a reminder to reflect back and appreciate our lives and the people in them.
We were trying to find the perfect place to have an fun and upscale cocktail party. I didn’t want it in a ballroom or to feel like a wedding. We found it at the Hotel Palomar San Diego rooftop deck downtown.
The restaurant Saltbox (gastro-lounge with a farm to table focus) is downstairs, but the Summersault Rooftop Pool and Lounge on the 4th floor is also available for special events. This summer they also have happy hours, live music and pool parties. It was perfect-spacious, but still felt intimate. We had an indoor lounge for mingling and dancing that opened up to the open air pool and bar.
We ordered off the banquet menu, but were able to add in some of the signature Saltbox menu items from the flatbreads to the beef cheek tacos. Yum!
I didn’t do a lot in terms of decorations, I wanted to keep it simple so I splurged on the cakes which were like pieces of art in itself.
These fabulous cakes are from Extraordinary Desserts. My favorite was the White Chocolate Cheesecake-light white chocolate layered with raspberries and chocolate shavings.
(From left to right) Cheesecake, Caribe-chocolate mousse infused with mangos, bananas, and passion fruit layered between dark chocolate and lilikoi soaked chocolate cakes. I thought it could get soggy, but it didn’t. Invoire Royale-layers of vanilla bean soaked pound cakes and creamy white chocolate mousse filled fresh raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and blueberrIes. The white chocolate shavings were so beautiful it didn’t need any additional decoration. Le Bete Noir-creamy semi-sweet chocolate mousse, vanilla crème brûlée, chocolate ganache, are layered in between dark chocolate cakes and moistened with Madagascar vanilla bean syrup. This was great combo cake for my husband and I. He loves chocolate, I love cheesecake.
The Memories Event Photobooth was the hit of the party.
Some of my guests were shy at first, but then they couldn’t get enough and either could my kids. The owners are friendly and super accommodating. The booth itself was easy to use, there were fun props, the photos came out fast, and they were unlimited so each guest could get however many photos they wanted. At the end of the evening, I also had a beautiful scrapbook with all the crazy highlights and a DVD copy of the photos!
