Last night I caught Part 1 of a moving PBS documentary “Half The Sky”” Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Around The World”. It’s filled with unflinching accounts of exploitation and abuse, yet hope and inspiration at the same time. While it features Hollywood celebrities to help convey the story it’s message is about the women and girls around the world. It’s based on the book and is now a worldwide movement to put an end to the oppression of women and girls-the defining issue of our time.
Watching something like this not only raises our awareness of the world around us and inspires us to make a difference in others lives, but most importantly reminds us to take advantage of our own opportunities. As moms, as women we each have our own daily struggles, but when we come to realize how much we really do have compared to other parts of the world-a home, a family, access to education, a voice, free will to make our own choices it makes us appreciate our ability to make a difference even if it just starts with you.
Night Two of Half The Sky airs tonight on PBS, but if you miss it “Half The Sky” will stream on PBS online through the 9th.
